Mystic Fox - Northern Lights
By Jon Lupus
Jon continued along, wandering deeper into the forest. He almost had an unexplainable sense of where he was going. After a few hours, Jon stopped to rest under a tree, all the walking has left his feet tired. Jon looked up in the sky and saw a crow flying overhead, and landing in a tree near him.
‘The crows seem to like me, they used to love to hang around my flat, and caw during the day.’
Jon took out one of his books from his backpack, The Ways of the Winds and began reading.
Meanwhile, a red fox vixen, standing a few trees behind, is watching Jon, her tail waging slowly.
‘I wonder where he came from; he’s not from around here.’
Marie slowly walked closer, hiding behind each tree, making careful not to alert Jon, the arctic fox.
“Hello there, friend!” Marie waved at Jon. Jon, startled got to his feet quickly.
“Why’d you scare me like that?” Jon replied angrily. Marie’s ears lowered and she pouted, disappointed and worried that Jon doesn’t like her.
“I’m sorry,” Marie replied, “I guess I got excited, its not often people come this way. Tell me, what is your name?”
“It’s alright…,” Jon smiled, looking at Marie’s figure, “My name’s Jon Lupus, and what is yours?”
“My name is Marie,” Marie replied happily, “What brings you out here?”
“I’m on a bit of a quest; I guess you can call it that. I’m tired of the stress of living in town, and I wanted to… you know… get back to nature.”
Marie blushed.
“Well umm, I’m not sure what you mean by that…”
“It’s not like that,” Jon blushed slightly too, “What I meant is, I see the birds flying by, and the feral squirrels and rabbits running around, seemingly care free. I want to be like that, just living in nature, eating when I’m hungry, sleeping when I’m tired, and not having to worry about things.”
“Oh, now I know what you mean. I am part of a fox and wolf tribe that lives here in this forest.” Marie replied, “We are led by Aurora, the wise elder wolf. She knows a lot, I can take you to meet her if you want?”
“Aurora, eh?” Jon replied curiously, “Perhaps she can help me”
“Of course she can, silly, she’s really smart,” Marie giggled.
“How far is it till we get there?” Jon put his book away and got his backpack.
“Not far, you see the mountains in the distance? She lives at the bottom of the mountains, in a den. Follow me!” Marie went ahead quickly, but gracefully; moving through the dense trees, Jon followed behind her, sometimes having trouble keeping up.
‘Wow, I must be out of shape,’ Jon thought to himself as he hurried behind her, dodging the occasional low branch.
Eventually the two made it to the mountain, by this time, night was beginning to fall. The sky was aglow with the northern lights, glowing a cool light blue.
“Wow, It never ceases to amaze me, the northern lights,” Marie looked up to the sky, her tail wagging.
“So, where is she?” Jon replied impatiently.
“Such an impatient young one…,” a mysterious but familiar voice called out.
“Huh?! That voice! It’s the one from my dream,” Jon’s ears perked up.
“Welcome home Jon…,”
“Who are you? Why are you in my dreams?” Jon shouted, startled.
An older, lavender furred she wolf emerged from the shadows. She was bigger than Jon and Marie, and carried a wooden, shaman’s staff.
“My name is Aurora, and your questions will be answered in due time…,” the wolf replied, “Come now, to my den, and all will be answered Jon.”
“Come on, Jon,” Marie said excitedly, tugging Jon’s shoulder, “Lead the way Aurora!”
Jon and Marie followed the older Wolf back to her den.
