Mystic Fox - Northern Lights

By Jon Lupus

The next morning was slightly warmer than the previous days, Jon was resting under a tree in the shade, he lay there curled up as arctic foxes do, with his tail wrapped around him. Suddenly Aurora came running.

“Jon! Jon!” Aurora was frantic, “Marie is missing, I can’t find her anywhere! I’m afraid she might be in danger.”

Jon woke and got up quickly,

“Where did you last see her?!” Jon replied, worried about his new vixen friend.

“She wandered off towards the forest edge in search of food; I fear she might have fallen into a hunter’s trap.”

“We gotta save her!” Jon hurried off.

“Wait!” Aurora ran after him, “Remember what I taught you.”

They reached the edge of the forest, and looked around. Jon sniffed the air, faintly able to pick up Marie’s scent.

“This way Aurora!” Jon and Aurora hurried down the grassy field, down the hill, and in the distance there was a small cabin in the woods, they stopped and saw Marie tied to the side of the cabin, sitting there.

“We gotta rescue her! But how?” Jon carefully studied the area.

“We gotta go carefully Jon, how do you know there aren’t other traps?” Aurora replied, “Patience is the key.”

Jon and Aurora hid behind some tall grass closer to the cabin, now was the time to strike, neither could smell the hunters or hear them about. Jon and Aurora quickly went in, dodging behind trees to get closer to the cabin. Marie’s ears perked up as she noticed they were coming to her rescue.

“Hey guys, thanks for rescuing me, they’re trying to make me into their pet.” Marie said, panting, injured from the trap. Jon and Aurora used their claws to untie the rope from her leg.

          “Oww!”

“Sorry Marie, come let’s get you out of here,” Jon embraced Marie and helped her up.

“Not so fast!” A tall man came out from the bushes, wearing a large parka. “No ones gunna take my pet vixen. I found her me-self.”

“You two go, Ill take care of him,” Aurora replied. Marie and Jon ran back into the hills, worried about their lupine friend. Aurora stood her ground, staring down the hunter. Aurora let out a loud bark and jumped forward at the man, knocking him to the ground. The man kicked her off, but Aurora landed on her feet. She then lunged forward for a second go, this time biting the man on his shoulder, bringing him down. Aurora then fled back the same way she came.

By this time, Jon and Marie were back at the den, worried about Aurora. Marie was crying, partly from the shock of being captured, and from worry over Aurora. Jon was holding her close, comforting her.

“I hope Aurora is alright,” Marie sobbed.

“Don’t worry Marie, that big girl can hold her own.” Jon replied.

An hour later, Aurora arrived at the den.

“Don’t worry; he won’t be bothering us much anymore. I made sure of it.”

“Aurora!” Marie jumped up and hugged Aurora tightly, “We were so worried about you!”

          Aurora turned to Jon.

“You’ve done very well; I think you have mastered your canine instincts.” Aurora sat down on her bed, exhausted from the ordeal.

“So whats next?” Jon asked curiously.

“Isn’t it obvious?” Marie blushed, as she embraced Jon tightly and gave him a kiss.

Jon turned to Aurora, confused. Aurora laughed.

“Well you know Jon, spring is on the way, and everybody knows it’s the season of love.” Aurora replied.

“Yea Jon,” Marie tugged his arm, “My brave foxie hero.”

Jon smiled, with a big feeling of accomplishment. He went from a fox feeling out of place in a world that just didn’t accept him, to a new world, a world where he met two of the best friends an arctic fox can have, a world enriched by his new ability to use his senses to their fullest.
